Bideocea - Nebunie Necurată
Bidocea is an avant-garde experimental electronic producer from Romania. His music dabbles in hip-hop, industrial electronica and cubistic deconstructionism. As an upcoming producer on the scene, his music is incredibly unique and impossible to ignore.
Much of Nebunie Necurată is missing a melody, yet at times its dissonance works to great advantages. Mai Bine Lasă is a solid opener. Centipezi Gigantici aromatizes its vicious soundscapes into a varied and thought-provoking suite, while Pierdut consistently rocks its anarchistic, devouring soundscapes. Normalitate is an exceptional piece of anarchical abstraction, with its samples being a pleasurable bowtie to the hypnotic fragmented beats. Unlike most albums today, the album is backloaded, with much of the best material towards the end. Glomoz ditches the rap format to focus on entirely on eerie chamber-rock, and Nimic Nu E Pe Bune closes the album with style and masterful execution.
While its production may be incredibly impressive, unfortunately Bideocea’s vocal delivery mars the album quite a bit. A poor rap performance is easy to distinguish when heard in another language; without the lyrics, it’s easy to discern what makes a good performance. Unlike foreign artists like Sigur Rós and Fishmans, whose music transcends language, Bidocea’s vocal delivery fails to entice. Moreover, much of the delivery is repetitive and mixed much too loudly in the mix. There are exceptions however, such as the slick Moluscocid and its coarse delivery, or Rasputin and its impressive wall of synths. Whatever the song may be, even when the melody doesn’t stick and the vocals are difficult to bear, the album still entices with its impressive soundscapes.
Nebunie Necurată aims to deconstruct and reconstruct cubism, and sonically it often achieves it well; though the assimilating harmonic structures of rock do not quite match the standard flow of rap. Had the album been accompanied by a more singer song-writer approach, it could have easily had a bigger impact. The instrumentals are plush, the vibes are trippy, and the execution is undeniably stimulating. One can only hope production-wise the next album is of the same quality, with better vocals to match.
