Tone Death – Butterflies
Tone Death is an avant-garde, meditative ambient composer from New York, New York. Released on March 10, 2021, Butterflies was truly a magnificent debut.
The opener is truly comforting, displaying an array of rich and vibrant sections. The centrepiece and title track unfolds ethereally into a sombre, charming track. Sadly, Tone Death kind of takes the piss at the end, completing the album in a child-like, perhaps questionable closer. Despite the impeccable use of space, some sections feel unintentionally improvisational, as do other smaller segments throughout the preceding tracks. Nonetheless, it’s thoroughly enjoyable.
Butterflies’ soundscape is wholly captivating; there’s a sense of wonder during its entirety. It’s sound is nothing new, but it’s executed with passion. Additionally, there’s a clear sense of vision. One can only hope Tone Death’s next project is more ambitious. The meditative market is in dire need of innovation.
