LORN – The Map
LORN is an electronic producer and composer from Milwaukee, WI, United States. Known mostly for his refreshing take on minimalistic sound design during the edgy Skrillex-dominated dubstep era of the late 2000’s and his admirable OST for the video game Furi, LORN unfortunately demonstrates he is a one-trick pony on The Map.
The songs themselves are not bad, but shallow. BITTER ARCS features a solid framework, but it also boasts an empty progression and far too simple arps. Much could be said the title track, THE MAP. The final track, TRANSMUTE, is a completely different affair. Here, LORN demonstrates how to make a powerful bass mesmerising. Moreover, the progression is natural, and consistently builds into a grand finale. An album composed of tracks such as the final track would certainly rank higher.
It’s evident LORN has spent a great deal of time mixing, mastering, and polishing his work; unfortunately, it’s substanceless, and relies entirely on its aesthetic to carry it. Furthermore, these tracks sound like they were all composed in an afternoon, though at least with a great deal of time polishing it. There’s only so far you can polish a bland piece of work, though. Had the aesthetic been unique, it may have come with a recommendation, though like the countless other electronic artists that fail to make a wave, The Map fails to make a name of its own.
