The man with the monkey album collabed with Системы теплоснабжения and released Музыка для Пыток on December 28th, 2020th. Despite a brilliant sound design, the collaboration resulted in a boring output overall.
The problem with Музыка для Пыток is the mood is almost non-existant. Despite containing fragments of insectoid’s previous work, gone are the bass-heavy backdrops and associated tension. What does differentiate Музыка для Пыток from the Russian man’s previous body of work is its inclusion of eccentric beats. 10 minutes throughout the first track boasts one of the most incredible, delirious soundscapes ever produced in the electronic scene. While there are certainly brilliant moments, they often feel disconnected and underdeveloped, almost as if the two artists were simply demoing how they could blend their sounds without properly working on composition. When it works, it works well; despite being a frustrating experience, there is a plethora of cool moments.
With more work in the songwriting department, Музыка для Пыток could have been another incredible standout in the underground scene; unfortunately, it’s a disappointing effort, borderlining on brilliance. Инсектарии Веспос’s incredible sound design could pair dazzlingly with anyone; here’s hoping he collabs with more artists in future… One can only hope he puts as much effort into it as his own work, though.
