S. Rabbit - Fend
2023 is certainly the year of the rabbit.
S. Rabbit is an indie bedroom folk composer from Savannah, Georgia. Following a rather disappointing sleuth of albums, the artist significantly stepped up her game on 2023’s Fend. In S. Rabbit’s transition to a tighter production and more flush instrumental ensemble, her charm has only been bolstered. The melodies are more fleshed out, the instrumentals clearer and the soundscapes more full.
While the compositions are more expansive, there’s very little variation them, though. This is not only in comparison to one another but compared to preceeding S. Rabbit albums. There’s experimentation with piano ballads towards the end, such as during the gorgeous tenant, though it can’t help sounding like late Lisa Germano. If I were to give any advice to S. Rabbit, it would be to focus on early Germano, and if you haven’t heard her, please do. Not only are each Germano albums distinct from one another on a stylistic and personal level, each song is memorable and distinct.
Variety in songwriting is truly the only factor holding Fend back from reaching greater heights. Without the complexity in songwriting, the album has very limited replayability. The album is a gorgeous gelato melting in the sun, to be quickly devoured, but leave one yearning for more in the scorching heat. To keep us happy, all S. Rabbit needs to do is give us more ice cream, but add some continents next time; or stop serving us vanilla.
